A scorching summer day. The year is 2019. A record-breaking heatwave blankets the Cambridge University Botanic Garden. The air shimmers.
Welcome to the Cambridge University Botanic Garden a haven of tranquility and botanical wonder. Established in 1831 by Professor John Stevens Henslow Charles Darwin’s mentor this 16-hectare garden holds over 8000 plant species. It wasn’t always here though.
For years before 1831 the Cambridge University Botanic Garden existed in a smaller location in the city center. This earlier garden known as the Walkerian Botanic Garden was a classic Renaissance physic garden. It primarily cultivated plants for medicinal purposes. Think herbs and remedies. Students learned about botany and medicine in this smaller space.
Professor Henslow however envisioned something grander. He believed the Cambridge University Botanic Garden needed more space. A larger site would allow for more extensive research and teaching. In 1831 the University purchased the current location. This plot of land was initially 40 acres but only 20 acres were initially developed. The remainder became allotments.
The Cambridge University Botanic Garden we see today is a testament to careful planning. Henslow and his assistant Cardale Babington designed it with skill. They transformed a rather unpromising flat site. They even cleverly used an old gravel pit to create a stunning lake. Think of the landscape design. It wasn’t just about beauty. Plants were arranged according to their botanical families. This made the garden a living textbook.
The glasshouses the earliest rock gardens the rare trees. These were all carefully added to create the Cambridge University Botanic Garden. By the 1870s the main features were complete. The garden became a vital center for botanical teaching and research. It hosted groundbreaking work in plant genetics plant physiology and plant pathology.
Imagine William Bateson Charles Chamberlain Hurst and Edith Rebecca Saunders working here. Their pioneering studies laid the foundation for modern plant genetics. Their discoveries were made in this very garden.
The Cambridge University Botanic Garden wasn’t just a research hub. It also became a place of extreme heat. On July 25 2019 it recorded the highest temperature ever recorded in the UK 38.7 degrees Celsius. This record stood for a time until it was broken in 2022. Even then the Cambridge University Botanic Garden still hit nearly 40 degrees Celsius on that same day.
