It’s witnessed a century of dreams, dramas, and a whole lot of learning. Founded in 1915 as a spin-off of Bay Ridge High School, New Utrecht began as an all-boys school. It started small, tucked away in a modest building nearby. Its first graduating class numbered just sixteen. But destiny, it seemed, had bigger plans for New Utrecht High School. The city erected this grand building we see today in 1924. It quickly became co-ed, welcoming girls into its halls. And grow it did. New Utrecht’s student body exploded, nearing a staggering 11,000 students at its peak. Imagine that. At the time, it was the largest student population of any high school in the world. New Utrecht has always been more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a melting pot, a microcosm of the world. Students here speak over 30 languages. The school’s rich history isn’t without its challenges. New Utrecht has navigated racial tensions and periods of overcrowding. But through it all, it’s held onto its commitment to its students. New Utrecht High School boasts impressive facilities, like a football field, a swimming pool, two gyms, and even a wood shop. Students can explore a vast array of programs. There’s an Honors Academy, academies focusing on law, art and design, business and technology, travel and tourism, and even medical billing and coding. Partnerships with local colleges like Kingsborough Community College offer students the opportunity to earn college credit. Giving them a head start on their future. New Utrecht High School is a launchpad for dreams. Alumni have gone on to become prominent figures in fields ranging from law and medicine to the arts and entertainment. Remember Gabe Kaplan? The comedian and star of “Welcome Back, Kotter”? He’s a Ute, a proud graduate of New Utrecht High School. In fact, the school itself made a cameo in the show’s opening credits. New Utrecht High School isn’t just a school.
