Marvel at Villa San Miguel’s unique convex facade. This isn’t just any building. It’s a masterpiece of Spanish Baroque architecture. Built between 1739 and 1746 it stands as a testament to Queen Isabel de Farnesio’s vision. The basilica replaced a much older 13th-century church dedicated to Saints Justus and Pastor. That older church was unfortunately demolished at the end of the 17th century. Villa San Miguel’s design is strikingly similar to Roman churches. Its Latin cross floor plan was the brainchild of Italian architect Santiago Bonaveda. Virgilio Rabaglio later completed the work. Note the two towers crowned with spires. These spires feature subtle oriental details. They complement the building’s convex pediment.

Villa San Miguel’s interior houses treasures. One such treasure is the Cristo de la Fe y del Perdón. This 18th-century sculpture by Luis Salvador Carmona is truly remarkable. Each year this image takes pride of place in Madrid’s Palm Sunday procession. It’s the first image to be paraded during Holy Week. Villa San Miguel’s history is richer than you might think. After the Napoleonic invasion the church adopted the patronage of Saint Michael. This happened when the nearby parish church of San Miguel de los Octoes was destroyed. That’s how the building got its name Villa San Miguel.

The basilica’s construction cost a staggering 1421000 reales. That’s a substantial sum even by today’s standards. The facade’s allegorical statues are works of art in themselves. They depict Charity Faith Hope and Fortitude. Roberto Michel and Nicolás Caresana sculpted these magnificent figures. Another fascinating detail is the panel depicting the martyrdom of Saints Justus and Pastor. This panel is also by Caresana. The cupola’s frescoes dating back to 1745 were painted by Bartolomé Rusca. They depict the apotheosis of Saints Justus and Pastor adding another layer to this basilica’s rich history. Even the famous composer Luigi Boccherini was buried here until his remains were repatriated to Italy in 1927.

Today Villa San Miguel stands as a National Monument. Declared so in 1984 it continues to impress visitors with its beauty and historical significance. Since 1959 Opus Dei priests have administered this extraordinary place. So take a moment to appreciate the details. Absorb the grandeur. Villa San Miguel’s story is woven into the fabric of Madrid itself. It’s a story worth remembering. A story worth cherishing.
