Did you know that the Iberian Peninsula has been inhabited by humans for over a million years? It is a land of ancient history and diverse cultures. Today we will explore its story. The Iberian Peninsula is in southwestern Europe. It is mostly separated from the rest of the continent by the Pyrenees Mountains.

Let’s journey back to prehistoric times. Imagine Neanderthals roaming this land during the Middle Paleolithic period. They established the Mousterian culture around 70000 BC. Then about 40000 years ago anatomically modern humans arrived. They developed cultures like the Aurignacian and Magdalenian. These early inhabitants left behind complex art forms.

The Neolithic period saw the rise of megalithic cultures. People from the eastern Mediterranean brought the Cardium culture. This open-seas navigation culture influenced the peninsula. During the Chalcolithic period complex societies emerged. Around 2800 BC the Beaker culture developed. It spread from the Tagus estuary to western Europe.

The Bronze Age began around 2100 BC. The El Argar culture arose in southeastern Iberia. It may have been one of the first state-level societies. Metalworking technology spread to other cultures. The culture of the motillas developed groundwater systems in the Guadiana basin. These systems helped them survive arid conditions.

By the Iron Age the Iberian Peninsula was home to complex civilizations. These civilizations were either Pre-Celtic or Celtic. The Iberians lived in the east and south. The Aquitanian people lived in the western Pyrenees.

Around the 12th century BCE the Phoenicians explored the coast. They interacted with metal-rich communities. They founded Gadir now Cádiz around 1100 BCE. The Greeks and Carthaginians also settled along the coast. They founded trading colonies.

In 218 BCE the Romans arrived. They fought the Carthaginians during the Second Punic War. They called the peninsula Hispania. By 19 BCE the Romans controlled the entire peninsula. Local rebellions were suppressed. The Romans brought their language culture and laws.

During their 600-year rule the Romans transformed the Iberian Peninsula. They introduced the Latin language. They also built roads aqueducts and cities. The peninsula became a vital part of the Roman Empire.

In the early 5th century Germanic peoples invaded. The Suebi Vandals and Alans arrived. The Visigoths soon followed. They occupied the entire peninsula. They expelled or integrated the earlier invaders. The Visigoths ruled until 711.

In 711 Muslim armies conquered the Visigothic Kingdom. They landed at Gibraltar and quickly occupied most of the peninsula. Only the northern kingdoms remained Christian. Al-Andalus was the Arabic name for Muslim Iberia.

Between the 8th and 12th centuries Al-Andalus became a center of culture and learning. Córdoba Seville and Toledo flourished. Meanwhile Christian kingdoms in the north began the Reconquista. They gradually pushed south taking back territory.

The Caliphate of Córdoba collapsed in the 11th century. It split into smaller states called taifas. Christian forces conquered Toledo in 1085. The Almoravids and Almohads from North Africa intervened. They fought for control of the peninsula.

By the 13th century the Christian kingdoms dominated. The Crown of Aragon expanded overseas. It established an empire in the western Mediterranean. The Nasrid Kingdom of Granada remained the last Muslim stronghold.

In 1469 Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon married. This united the two powerful kingdoms. In 1492 they conquered Granada. They expelled Jews and Muslims from Spain. Spain became a major world power.

During the 16th century Spain created a vast empire in the Americas. Portugal also expanded overseas. The Iberian Union united the peninsula from 1580 to 1640. The 17th century brought economic challenges.

In the 19th century both Spain and Portugal started to modernize. After World War II strong urban development occurred. Today the Iberian Peninsula is a vibrant region. It is full of history culture and natural beauty. Its story is a testament to the many civilizations that have shaped it. The Iberian Peninsula remains a bridge between Europe Africa and the Americas.
