Perhaps Machangying’s most intriguing aspect lies not in what it is today, but in what it once was. Machangying Town sits in western Pinggu District. It borders several other towns. These include Yukou, Daxingzhuang, and Pinggu Town. Donggaocun, Mafang, Dasungezhuang and Zhang Towns also border it.

Machangying’s history dates back centuries. Its name comes from Machangying Village. The town government is located there. In 2020, the population was 16,794. The area covers 28.61 square kilometers. It has a density of 590 people per square kilometer.

Let’s delve into Machangying’s administrative past. From 1956 to 1958, it existed as Machangying Township. Houruiying Township also existed then. Both were within Pinggu County, Hebei. Between 1958 and 1961, Machangying became a Management Area. It was part of Mafang People’s Commune. This was now under Pinggu County, Beijing. From 1961 to 1984, it was known as Machangying People’s Commune. Later, from 1984 to 1996, it reverted to Machangying Township. It became Machangying Town from 1996 to 2002. Since 2002, it has been part of Pinggu District, Beijing.

By the end of 2021, Machangying Town consisted of 18 subdivisions. There was one community and 17 villages. The community is Zigui Jiayuan. The villages include Getatou, Wangguantun, and Maoguanying. Wanggezhuang and Machangying Village are also included. So are Weixinzhuang, Dong Chengezhuang and Xi Chengezhuang Villages. Dong Shuangying and Xi Shuangying Villages are part of it. Nan Dingfuzhuang and Bei Dingfuzhuang Villages are as well. Bogezhuang, Tianjing, Qian Ruiying and Hou Ruiying Villages also belong to Machangying. Lastly, there is Xishaizi Village.

Machangying may not be as famous as other parts of Beijing. However, its history and local character offer a unique glimpse into China’s development. It shows how place names are derived. It illustrates the shifts in administrative divisions. These details highlight the area’s evolution over time. Machangying is more than just a name. It represents layers of history.
