Belmont Park isn’t just an amusement park. It’s a living history book. John D Spreckels a sugar magnate envisioned it in 1925. He wanted to boost Mission Beach land sales. His vision became a reality on July 4th that year. It opened as the Mission Beach Amusement Center.
The Giant Dipper the park’s star attraction is a National Historic Landmark. Its wooden tracks have carried generations of laughter and screams. Imagine the countless smiles. The Plunge another historic gem started as a saltwater Natatorium. It was once the largest saltwater pool globally. Today it’s a freshwater haven. It faced closure in 2014 due to disrepair. A massive $12 million renovation brought it back to life. It reopened in 2019.

San Diego’s city council considered redevelopment. A proposal to restore the Plunge ultimately won out. The park reopened in 1988.
Later in 2010 the Wave House a major addition filed for bankruptcy. The owner Tom Lochtefeld even sued the city for a breach of contract. The suit was eventually settled.
Today Belmont Park continues to evolve. It boasts new attractions. The Beach Blaster a spinning pendulum ride. A zip line. A laser tag arena. Restaurants such as Cannonball Draft and Belmonty’s Burgers provide dining options. There’s even a 7D theater. The park hosts events like Winter Wonder and a Fall Festival.
