The Cambridge Science Centre opened to the public on February 8 2013. But its story began long before that. Dr. Chris Lennard and Dr. Katia Smith-Litiere had a vision. They wanted to make science accessible to everyone. They gained backing from technology entrepreneurs. David Cleevely Hermann Hauser and Jonathan Milner supported them.
Originally the Cambridge Science Centre was located on Jesus Lane. Its first exhibition explored the electromagnetic spectrum. It also covered the principles of sound and hearing. The centre aimed to engage families and school groups. Children aged 7 to 14 were the primary focus. The Cambridge Science Centre showcased interactive exhibits. It connected visitors to scientific research from Cambridge and beyond.
In December 2016 the centre closed for relocation. But the learning didn’t stop. Cambridge Science Centre launched “Street Science” pop-up events. In April 2018 the museum reopened. It continued its mission to inspire future scientists and engineers.
Today the Cambridge Science Centre hosts diverse activities. Exhibitions shows and workshops are regular features. Talks provide deeper insights into scientific topics. A highlight is the annual “Chain Reaction” event. Families schools and companies collaborate. They build intricate contraptions that trigger each other. It is a dynamic display of creativity and engineering skill.
The Cambridge Science Centre is more than just a museum. It is a STEM engagement charity. It inspires young people through hands-on experiences. The Cambridge Science Centre moved to the Trinity Centre on Cambridge Science Park. It opened there on July 23 2024. The centre is open for family visits on weekends and during school holidays. Over 20 new hands-on exhibits await discovery. Exciting new shows captivate audiences. The STEMLab and Workshop spaces challenge young minds. Science Communicators are present to support exploration.
Consider an annual membership. Pre-booking is required for all visits. Each session lasts for two hours. Experiences are designed for children aged 5–11. Younger and older siblings are welcome.
