Slipping through time, imagine yourself in 1963. Cartago is reeling from a volcanic eruption. Ash from Irazú Volcano has choked Bosque Las Prusias. This isn’t the vibrant, enchanting Bosque Las Prusias you see today. It’s a landscape struggling to breathe. Fast forward to present day. Bosque Las Prusias welcomes you with cool air and the distinctive scent of eucalyptus, cypress, and pine. These giants, some over 50 meters tall and two meters in diameter, were planted after the 1963 eruption and subsequent devastating storm. They stabilized the land, preventing further landslides. This seemingly heroic act had unforeseen consequences. The Bosque Las Prusias, part of Irazú Volcano National Park, is a popular attraction. Over 110,000 people visit annually, drawn to its 16-kilometer trail and the iconic “Haunted Tree”. But the very trees that saved the area are now a threat. They’re dying, falling, and taking native species with them. These non-native trees consume vast amounts of water, acidify the soil, and create a tinderbox for wildfires. They offer little sustenance to local wildlife. The native oaks, aguacatillos, and jaúls struggle to compete. They can’t regenerate naturally in the altered environment. Climate change further complicates the situation. Bosque Las Prusias, high in the mountains, could be a refuge for species fleeing rising temperatures. But the exotic trees disrupt this natural migration. They create a monoculture, hindering the forest’s ability to adapt. Efforts to restore the forest to its native state face legal hurdles. Costa Rican law protects forests as national heritage, making it difficult to remove the non-native trees. Despite this, small-scale restoration projects offer a glimmer of hope. A nearby half-hectare plot is now home to native roble, jaúl, and lauráceas. These will help stabilize the soil, provide food, and offer shelter to animals. The fight for Bosque Las Prusias is ongoing. The introduced trees continue to age. The threat of climate change looms. Yet, there’s a persistent hope. A hope that one day, Bosque Las Prusias will once again be the native forest it was meant to be.
