Once a portable station, now a vital voice. WZRC, also known as AM1480, stands as a testament to New York City’s ever-evolving media landscape. Imagine standing here. You can almost hear the echoes of its past.

WZRC is more than just a radio station. It’s a cultural touchstone. Its journey began in 1925 as WIBS, a portable station licensed to the New Jersey National Guard. Back then, portable stations were a novelty. They were broadcasting units mounted on trucks. This allowed them to move to different locations.

The station changed hands several times. In 1930, it became WHOM, standing for owner Harry O’Melia. By 1940, WHOM focused on foreign-language programming. This catered to New York’s diverse communities. In 1941, it moved to its current frequency, 1480 kHz.

The Popes, a media-rich family, acquired WHOM in 1946. They used their media empire to influence voters. Their publications included The National Enquirer and Il Progresso Italo-Americano.

In the late 1940s, WHOM broke barriers. It introduced an interracial deejay team. Willie Bryant and Ray Carroll hosted a popular music program. Their show ran until 1954.

The station shifted its focus to Spanish programming in 1960. In 1975, it became WJIT. The format changed to Spanish contemporary music. WJIT became a leading salsa and merengue station.

A significant shift occurred in 1990. Infinity Broadcasting changed WJIT to WZRC. The format switched to heavy metal-based Z Rock. Later, it briefly aired country music. Korean programming followed.

Multicultural Broadcasting acquired WZRC in 1998. In 2001, the station adopted a Cantonese format. Today, WZRC serves the New York metropolitan area. It stands as one of two Cantonese radio stations. It broadcasts news, talk shows, and music. It also rebroadcasts content from San Francisco and Hong Kong.

WZRC’s transmitting facility is not actually in New York City. It is located in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey. From its humble beginnings as a portable station to its current role as a Cantonese broadcaster, WZRC has mirrored New York’s dynamic cultural shifts. It provides a platform for news, entertainment, and community engagement. The station continues to inform and connect with its listeners. Its story is a reminder of how radio adapts to the needs of its audience.
