Whispers of healing water. That’s what draws pilgrims to Yanagidani Kannon. This isn’t just any temple. Yanagidani Kannon Yokokuji Temple nestled in Nagaokakyo City near Kyoto boasts a history as rich as its stunning gardens. Legend says its founding dates back to 806. Enchin founder of Kiyomizudera Temple discovered a statue of the eleven-faced thousand-armed Kannon. He enshrined it here building a hall in its honor. The temple’s main attraction is its eleven-faced thousand-armed statue of the bodhisattva Kannon. This majestic figure stands as a testament to the temple’s deep-rooted spiritual significance.

Yanagidani Kannon isn’t just about ancient history. Its beauty continues to captivate visitors. The temple grounds include a long corridor connecting buildings and a scenic garden Jodo-en designated by Kyoto Prefecture. Imagine strolling along the corridor admiring the meticulously landscaped garden. You’ll find a stunning display of over 4500 hydrangea plants in full bloom during June and the summer months. This creates a vibrant tapestry of color. The autumn foliage paints an equally breathtaking picture. Deep reds and bright crimson leaves create a fiery spectacle. This spectacle is visible only on the 17th of each month.

Another fascinating aspect of Yanagidani Kannon is its Kamishoin Study. Once a private study for the elite during the Meiji era it’s now open to the public. The views from the study are exceptional. They offer panoramic vistas of the serene gardens below. This is a unique place to reflect and appreciate the tranquility of the temple grounds. Yanagidani Kannon also holds a special place in Buddhist lore. It’s believed that holy water oko-zui is present here. This water is said to have been blessed by the renowned monk Kukai. It’s believed to possess healing properties particularly for eye ailments. This makes it a site of both spiritual and physical healing.

The 17th of each month holds special significance. It marks the anniversary of the temple founder’s death. It’s also a day when shuttle buses operate from nearby train stations. This makes it easier to visit. On this day you can participate in Gokaicho the unveiling of the Buddhist image. A truly unique experience. The temple’s rich history breathtaking gardens and legendary healing water make Yanagidani Kannon a must-see destination. Leaving you with a sense of peace and wonder. This is a truly unforgettable pilgrimage.
