Considering the name “Wat Thong Thammachat Worawihan” what does it truly mean? “Golden nature” is the English translation. Wat Thong Thammachat Worawihan stands as a testament to Bangkok’s rich history. It offers a tranquil escape from the city’s bustle.

Wat Thong Thammachat Worawihan is located in the Khlong San area. It sits on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. This temple is a third-grade royal temple. It holds the status of Worawihan.

Let’s step back in time. Wat Thong Thammachat Worawihan dates back to the Ayutthaya period. Originally, it was known as Wat Thongbon. During King Rama I’s reign, a significant restoration occurred. King Rama I’s sister, Krommaluang Narinthorn Thewi, oversaw this with her husband, Krommamuen Narinthorn Phithak.

King Rama III also played a crucial role in Wat Thong Thammachat Worawihan’s history. He assigned Krom Somdet Phradechadisorn to expand the temple. Subsequently, King Rama III elevated it to a Royal Temple. He renamed it Wat Thong Thammachat Ratchapatisangkhon.

In 1915, during King Rama VI’s rule, another large-scale restoration took place. This focused on the Ubosot. The Ubosot is also known as the Ordination Hall. The restoration maintained the original shape.

Inside the Ubosot, you’ll find the Principal Buddha Image. It is crafted from gold-covered plaster. The image sits in the Subduing Mara posture. King Rama IX later named this image Phra Phutthachinnachat Matthammakhun.

The ordination hall has two panelled doors. These doors are at the front and rear. Five windows line both sides of the hall. The Bai Sema marks the boundary. These markers are in the style of the early Rattanakosin period. They are sheltered inside canopied seats. Chedis stand at each corner of the wall. These Chedis have indented corners. Gateways are at the mid-point of each wall. Niches surmount these gateways. The style reflects King Rama IV’s era.

Wat Thong Thammachat Worawihan was built by commoners. King Rama III bestowed a royal name. The temple is also near the Wang Lee Mansion. A wooded park once stood in front of the temple. It now serves as a car park. To the south, monks’ quarters display different styles. The bell tower rises roughly in the center. It faces the car park side.

Outside the entrance, some trees remain. A large, old-fashioned red meeting hall stands behind them. Next to the hall grows a Boh tree. This tree came from Buddha’s place of enlightenment in India.

The intricate decorations of the Ayutthaya style are reflected in the ubosot. It features a curved base. Fanciful roof brackets add to its charm. The ubosot sits in a beautifully landscaped courtyard. Two open pavilions flank the front entrance. The mural paintings are an excellent example. They date back to the reign of King Rama III. These murals were likely repaired during King Rama IV’s reign.

Wat Thong Thammachat Worawihan is a hidden gem. It offers a peaceful area for visitors. The temple stands as a testament to history. It invites all to appreciate its beauty and heritage.
