The imposing yellow brick of St Barnabas Church greets you. Its stone bands a testament to Victorian grandeur. But did you know its story began much later than its style suggests?

St Barnabas isn’t ancient. It’s a relative newcomer to Cambridge. Construction started in 1869. The chancel was finished by 1870. The nave and aisles however took longer. They were completed only between 1878 and 1887. The original plan? A magnificent tower and spire. That vision remained unrealized. A grand design left incomplete.

Imagine the builders. Their hands shaping the decorated tracery. A style reminiscent of the 13th century. Yet this is distinctly Victorian. A blend of old and new. St Barnabas was consecrated in May 1880. It became a new parish. Born from parts of St Andrew the Less St Paul and St Matthew. A merging of communities. A testament to growth in a burgeoning city.

St Barnabas sits on Mill Road. A bustling street. A far cry from the quiet contemplation one might associate with a church. Yet it serves its community. It’s a place of worship yes. But it also offers meals to pensioners and the homeless. A beacon of hope in a sometimes deprived area. A symbol of community action.

So look around. See the east window’s elaborate swirls. Notice the buttresses supporting the walls. Its imposing yet welcoming nature. It’s more than a beautiful building. It’s a living part of Cambridge’s history. A testament to faith and community spirit. It’s a story worth remembering. A story written not in stone alone but in the lives it touches.
