The Frauenfriedenskirche in Frankfurt am Main stands as a remarkable example of interwar modernist architecture. Its construction a dream born from the ashes of World War I. Hedwig Dransfeld a powerful woman envisioned this church in 1916. It was to be a memorial for the fallen a symbol of peace.

The initial funds raised were sadly wiped out by the devastating hyperinflation of 1914-1923. Yet the vision persevered. A competition attracted 157 architects. Hans Herkommer’s design though not initially the winner was eventually chosen. His work perfectly captured the era’s ‘New Objectivity’ style.

Construction began in 1927 concluding in 1929. The Frauenfriedenskirche’s west facade is dominated by a 25-meter high portal. The central arch showcases the monumental mosaic of Mary. Flanking it are mosaics symbolizing war and peace. Emil Sutor the sculptor masterfully created these lasting images.

Inside the church’s high arches lead to a spacious nave. A crypt beneath holds a poignant Pietà by Ruth Schaumann. Above the altar another remarkable mosaic. This one by Joseph Eberz depicts Jesus’ crucifixion. Mary pierced by seven swords representing her sorrows stands below.

The Frauenfriedenskirche suffered damage in World War II. It was later rebuilt thanks to generous donations. A thoughtful detail names of German soldiers lost in both world wars are displayed inside the church.
