Imagine a Milan reborn, rising from the ashes of cholera. That’s the story of the Chiesa di San Carlo al Corso. This church stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and architectural ambition.

The Chiesa di San Carlo al Corso owes its existence to a dire past. A cholera epidemic ravaged Milan. As the city recovered, the church was conceived as an act of gratitude. It honored Saint Charles Borromeo. He was admired for his service during the bubonic plague of the 16th century.

Before this grand structure stood here, a monastic complex of the Servite Order occupied this space. It included the church of Santa Maria dei Servi. But progress called for change. Milan desired a modern boulevard stretching from the Piazza del Duomo to Piazza San Babila. With the blessing of the local provost, the old structures were razed. A grander church was to take its place.

Construction began in 1832. The demolition of the old cloister started in 1838. Thirty-thousand lire were spent to purchase the property. Donations were collected to fund the church. The facade, designed by Carlo Amati in 1844, was completed in 1847.

One can’t help but notice the resemblance to the Pantheon in Rome. Amati also designed the colonnade around the piazza. It was intended to house shops and commercial structures.

Inside the Chiesa di San Carlo al Corso, chapels flank the main altar. One is dedicated to the Madonna of Sorrows. Its statue came from Santa Maria dei Servi. The other honors Giovanni Angelo Porro. Its altar is from the prior church. Near the entrance, you’ll find a baptistery and a chapel of the Crucifix. Look up to the apse ceiling. There you will see a fresco depicting the Glory of San Carlo. It is surrounded by allegories of Faith, Hope, and Charity painted by Angelo Inganni.

The Chiesa di San Carlo al Corso became a model for others. The Chiesa Rotonda in San Bernardino, Switzerland, built in 1867, was inspired by it. It stands as a spiritual and cultural symbol for Milan. Its architectural beauty is a testament to Milan’s rich heritage.

Managed by the Servite Order, the Chiesa di San Carlo al Corso continues to serve as a place of worship. You can attend daily Masses and special celebrations honoring Saint Charles Borromeo. The church is located on Corso Giacomo Matteotti. It is easily accessible and welcomes visitors to experience its serene atmosphere.

So, as you stand here, remember the story of Milan’s rebirth. The Chiesa di San Carlo al Corso is not just a church. It is a symbol of hope, gratitude, and the enduring spirit of a city.
