Opened in 2013, the University of Cambridge Sports Centre stands before us. It’s more than just a building. It’s a hub for sports and fitness in Cambridge. Did you know that anyone can become a member here? You don’t need to be affiliated with the university.
The University of Cambridge Sports Centre is managed by Nick Brooking. It’s a relatively recent addition to the university. Many considered it long overdue when it opened. Before this, the Physical Education Department was located at Fenner’s.
Inside the University of Cambridge Sports Centre, you’ll find a large sports hall. It measures 37 by 34 meters. The hall is marked for various sports. These include basketball and volleyball. You can even play five-a-side football here. The hall also has tiered seating. It can accommodate up to 400 spectators.
For those focused on fitness, there’s a special suite. The Fitness, Strength and Conditioning Suite has a fitness suite. Here, you can find treadmills and ski ergs. There are even Jacobs Ladders for a challenging workout. The suite also includes a Strength and Conditioning Room. It features eight Olympic lifting platforms. A two-lane plyometric track is also available.
The University of Cambridge Sports Centre has a multi-purpose room. It hosts floor-based sports and classes. Fencing, martial arts, yoga, and Zumba are all offered here. Squash enthusiasts will appreciate the five glass-backed courts. A team-training area is available. Many university sports clubs use it.
Cambridge University has a rich sporting tradition. It’s as known for sports as it is for academics. Over the past 150 years, many great athletes have studied here. Michael Atherton and Emma Pooley are just two examples. The university has also produced numerous Olympians and Paralympians.
Today, the University of Cambridge Sports Centre supports a vibrant sports scene. There are 53 sports clubs. The university regularly places in the top 20 in BUCS competitions. Scholarships are available for elite athletes.
Future developments are planned for the University of Cambridge Sports Centre. These may include indoor and outdoor tennis courts. There’s also potential for a swimming pool. These new facilities will be near the Eddington community. The plans are in the early stages. Architectural sketches will be created. Public consultation will follow.
The University of Cambridge Sports Centre isn’t the only sports facility. The Sports Service maintains other sites. These include Wilberforce Road Sports Ground and Fenner’s. These cater to athletics, hockey, cricket, and tennis. Other club and college grounds are located throughout the city. They support rugby, rowing, and many other sports.
