Whispers of history linger within these walls. St Luke’s Church in Cambridge stands before you. A Victorian marvel it has witnessed the transformation of New Chesterton. From rural fields to a thriving community its story unfolds.

Originally serving a sparsely populated area St Luke’s humble beginnings started in 1850. An Industrial School housed early church services. As New Chesterton grew a wooden church was constructed in 1866. This temporary structure proved insufficient. A more permanent stone church was needed.

Construction of the stone church commenced in 1873. Bishop Woodford consecrated the first part in 1874. The final section including the spire was completed in 1885. St Luke’s became a focal point for the burgeoning community. It served as St Luke’s Chesterton parish.

In 1982 a significant change occurred. St Luke’s joined forces with St Giles’ Cambridge. The Parish of the Ascension was born. This union reflected the evolving religious landscape of the area.

The end of the 1980s saw another shift. The Victoria Road Congregational Church was demolished. Its congregation found a new home within St Luke’s. This marked a new chapter of ecumenical partnership.

Since 2005 St Luke’s has embraced this ecumenical spirit. The Church of England and United Reformed Church traditions united. This Local Ecumenical Partnership LEP works together. They worship together. They serve the community.

Extensive refurbishment has enhanced St Luke’s. Four community rooms now complement the church space. These form the St Luke’s Church Centre. The old school building has been restored. It houses the Ascension Parish Office. More community rooms are available.

St Luke’s stands not just as a place of worship but also a community hub. Its history reflects the ever-changing face of Cambridge. Its present embodies a spirit of collaboration and shared faith. It’s a testament to the enduring power of community and faith. This is St Luke’s Church. A living legacy in Cambridge.
