What if a building could whisper tales of pioneering women and evolving education? Here at Hughes Hall, the whispers are loud and clear. Hughes Hall, Cambridge University’s oldest graduate college, stands before us, a testament to changing times and unwavering ambition. Hughes Hall isn’t your typical Cambridge college. Founded in 1885 as the Cambridge Training College for Women, its initial purpose was to train women graduates for the teaching profession. The college’s first principal, Elizabeth Phillips Hughes, led the charge from a small house called Crofton Cottage in Newnham with just fourteen students. Imagine those early days, filled with the fervent hope of breaking barriers in education.

Hughes Hall quickly outgrew Crofton Cottage. In 1895, it moved to its current location, a purpose-built structure overlooking Fenner’s cricket ground. The main building, now called the Wileman Building, is a blend of 19th and 20th-century architecture. It houses student rooms, the college library, and various administrative offices. As the role of women in education evolved, so did Hughes Hall. In 1949, it became a recognized institution of Cambridge University, renamed in honor of its founding principal. A significant milestone arrived in 1973 when Hughes Hall became the first all-female college at Cambridge to admit men.

Today, Hughes Hall embraces a diverse student body, representing over 60 nationalities. The college welcomes both postgraduate and mature undergraduate students, fostering a unique blend of experience and academic pursuits. Students at Hughes Hall don’t just study; they live. The college boasts active sports teams, various societies, and even a “Hat Club” where students and fellows present their research. The Pavilion Room resonates with music, hosting regular performances and the college choir. The Hughes Hall Boat Club, with a history of success in the May Bumps, embodies the college’s competitive spirit. And every year, the college hosts a May Ball, often celebrating a global theme.

Hughes Hall is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where history intertwines with the present, where whispers of the past inspire future leaders. From its humble beginnings in Crofton Cottage to its present-day status as a vibrant and inclusive college, Hughes Hall continues to embody the pioneering spirit of Elizabeth Phillips Hughes. As you leave Hughes Hall, carry with you the echoes of its story. A story of ambition, evolution, and a commitment to learning in order to serve.
