Ever craved custard buns so good they’re legendary? Right here, at the Dai Tung Restaurant in Guangzhou, you’ll find exactly that. Dai Tung Restaurant is a place where history and culinary traditions intertwine, offering a unique dining experience that transcends time. Dai Tung Restaurant has a rich history, deeply rooted in Guangzhou’s vibrant culinary scene. Established during a turbulent time in the city’s history, the Dai Tung Restaurant originally opened under a different name. It was first known as the Guangzhouyuan Restaurant. Founded during the Japanese occupation by a Japanese businessman named 中澤親禮, the restaurant struggled initially. It was later sold in 1942 to Hong Kong restaurateur Feng Jiansheng. He wisely renamed it Dai Tung Restaurant, giving it a fresh start. Following the Chinese victory in the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Dai Tung Restaurant faced another turning point. It was auctioned off as enemy property and acquired by Tan Jienan. He was a prominent figure in Guangzhou’s teahouse scene, bringing his expertise to this newly acquired venture. On the brink of the communist takeover, Tan strategically sold parts of the business to establish the Xinguang Restaurant in Hong Kong. Only a small staff of 20 remained at the original Dai Tung Restaurant in Guangzhou. In the early days of the People’s Republic, the Dai Tung Restaurant’s operations were limited, serving only breakfast and brunch. Business was slow. However, in a pivotal moment in 1955, the Dai Tung Restaurant became the city’s first experimental joint venture establishment. This marked a turning point in its fortunes. A year later, it even expanded with a second location in Beijing. Today, the Dai Tung Restaurant still echoes with these historical shifts. While some reviews praise its custard buns and affordable prices, others point to inconsistent service. It’s a reminder of the challenges and triumphs that have shaped Dai Tung’s journey. So, as you savor your meal at Dai Tung Restaurant, remember that you’re partaking in a culinary tradition that has weathered historical storms and emerged as a testament to Guangzhou’s enduring spirit.
