Who could ever imagine a judge abandoning his prestigious career for a spiritual quest? Here at the Pagla Baba Temple in Kolkata, that very question hangs in the air. This temple is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to unwavering faith and the surprising turns life can take. The Pagla Baba Temple isn’t as widely known as some of Kolkata’s grander temples, but it holds a unique charm. It’s a place where the extraordinary story of a simple Brahmin, a moneylender, and a judge intertwines with devotion to Lord Krishna. The tale goes that a Brahmin, a devout follower of Banke Bihari Ji, took a loan. He diligently repaid it. Yet, the moneylender falsely claimed the loan was still outstanding. Their dispute landed in court. When asked for a witness, the Brahmin declared Banke Bihari Ji would testify for him. Astonishingly, an old man appeared in court the next day, corroborating the Brahmin’s story. The judge, baffled yet intrigued, discovered the old man vanished after the trial. The Brahmin explained that Banke Bihari Ji resides everywhere, in everyone. This encounter shook the judge to his core. He resigned, left his family, and embarked on a spiritual journey to Vrindavan, searching for Thakur Ji. In his relentless quest, he lost himself, living on scraps and sharing them with Banke Bihari. People, witnessing his eccentric behavior, labeled him “Pagla Baba,” meaning “mad saint.” Devotees, moved by his devotion, helped him build a temple in Vrindavan dedicated to Banke Bihari Ji. The Pagla Baba Temple in Kolkata stands as a tribute to this extraordinary journey of faith. It reminds us that even amidst the bustling city, stories of profound devotion can unfold.
