“Feeling feverish,” the man muttered, “I can’t breathe.” This brings us to the Naniwa Police Station. It stands here a place of order but also a site of complex human stories.

The Naniwa Police Station, located at 5-5-11 Nipponbashi, Naniwa-ku, Osaka, is more than just a building. It is a focal point for law enforcement in the Naniwa district. Its phone number is 06-6633-1234. The station’s jurisdictional district covers Osaka-shi Naniwa-ku. It handles everything from traffic issues to serious crimes.

In December 2022, the Naniwa Police Station was at the center of a controversy. A man detained for allegedly violating the Stimulants Control Act died in custody. He had been arrested three days prior.

The man was restrained. Police said it was because he was violent. He was bound by his hands and feet for 90 minutes on December 16th. He was restrained again for two and a half hours early on December 17th. Police monitored him because he threatened self-harm.

On the afternoon of December 17th, officers found him unresponsive in his cell. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. An autopsy revealed an “organ irregularity.” The man had complained of breathing difficulties. He also felt feverish. Police decided against taking him to the hospital. His temperature seemed normal and he was behaving erratically.

The lack of independent oversight raised concerns. Human rights activists called for reform. They wanted greater oversight of law enforcement.

The Naniwa Police Station handles many essential functions. These include driver’s licenses and garage certificates. It also plays a crucial role in transportation and crime prevention within Naniwa-ku.

As we stand here, remember the weight of responsibility. Consider the complexities faced by those who serve within the Naniwa Police Station. Their work shapes the safety and security of this community.
