Question: What if a school building could tell tales of transformation and triumph? That’s precisely what the Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost would do if its walls could talk. Established in 1968, the Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost has grown from humble beginnings to a vital educational institution in Essen.

Initially, it started as a branch of the Goethe Schule. This was in response to overcrowding in Essen’s gymnasiums. The Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost officially gained its name in June 1968. It was then known as the “Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliches Gymnasium in Essen”. This marked the beginning of coeducation at the school.

By 1972, the growing student body necessitated a new building. Negotiations led to the construction of a school center on Katzenbruchstraße. Though the classrooms were ready by September 1973, the Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost still awaited a proper sports hall.

The Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost reached a peak enrollment of 1298 students in 1977. The completion of the second construction phase eased spatial constraints. From 1976 to 1993, a total of 1572 students graduated from the Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost.

The Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost faced a low point in 1991. Student numbers dropped to 651. That same year, the school introduced its Ganztagsschule program. The student population rebounded. It reached approximately 1000 by 2005.

To support the Ganztagsbetrieb, the Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost added new facilities. These included a pedagogical center with a canteen and auditorium. A self-learning center opened in 2002. A small sports facility was added in 2003, followed by a beach volleyball court in 2004. In 2020, the Geno was a prize winner of the German School Prize.

As the building from 1968 is considered to be in need of renovation, a new school building is planned. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025 and conclude by 2028.

The Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost offers a wide range of language courses. Besides the standard subjects, students can study Russian and Spanish in upper school. French or Latin are available as a second foreign language from the 6th grade. The GENO also offers the DELF certificate.

The Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost is designed as an open all-day school. Afternoon programs include lunch, homework supervision, and tutoring. Students can also participate in various clubs and recreational activities.

Since 2007, the Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost has run a mentoring program for struggling students. Retired teachers provide lessons during the summer break. The Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost participates in the ZEUS project. Students receive the daily newspaper, discuss it in class, and write articles for the local section.

Through the “Project 17/70”, students assist senior citizens. Participants receive training before volunteering for a year. The Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost features musical projects, including the “Chor-Piraten”. Theater performances and differentiation courses in “Music and Computer” add to the cultural offerings.

The “Förderverein Gymnasium Nord-Ost” has supported the school since 1969. It has contributed to the school library, the small sports facility, and a ramp to the “CaféCult”. The Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost collaborates with other Essen schools. This happens through the “Netzwerk MAUS” to improve teaching materials.

Since 1995, the Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost publishes a yearbook. Every two years, the school hosts the “Nord-Ost-Pokal”. It is an internal hall football tournament for students, teachers, and alumni.
