“Did you know that the Saifee Mosque on Moore Street was established in 1803? It stands as a testament to the Dawoodi Bohra community’s rich history in Chennai.

Welcome to the Saifee Mosque. It is a serene haven of Islamic culture in Chennai. The Saifee Mosque is more than just a place of worship. It represents architectural beauty and spiritual significance. This mosque offers a tranquil refuge from the urban landscape.

Let’s delve into the story of this beautiful mosque. It showcases an elegant blend of traditional Islamic architecture and contemporary design. The minarets rise gracefully. They are adorned with intricate geometric patterns and Arabic calligraphy. These reflect the community’s rich cultural heritage. The prayer halls are spacious. They are adorned with ornate details. These provide worshippers with a serene environment for prayer and reflection.

The Saifee Mosque also serves as a vibrant community center. It hosts social and educational activities. These include religious teachings, cultural events, and charitable initiatives. The mosque promotes interfaith dialogue and outreach programs. It fosters harmony among diverse groups within Chennai.

Mulla Jafferji ibn Mulla Ismailji was the first Bohra Muslim to move to Madras from Gujarat. He arrived in the 1790s. He joined his uncle Sheikh Ahmed Ali in Arcot. Ahmed Ali helped him set up a bangle business. In 1793, Jafferji moved to Madras. He established a garment business. Ahmed Ali’s grave is the first in the graveyard bought by Jafferji. It was built in 1797.

The Bohra Muslims are originally from Gujarat. They speak Gujarati. When they came to Chennai, they socialized with Urdu-speaking Muslims. They began speaking Urdu at home. They adopted some of the local culture and cuisine. Khatti dal and khatta salna are dishes they adopted.

Today, there are 10000 Bohra Muslims in Chennai. Many live in the Parrys area. This is due to Jafferji’s early settlement and the proximity to the port. The Saifee Mosque is not only a religious center but also a historical landmark.

The Saifee Mosque stands as a symbol of unity. It is a testament to the Dawoodi Bohra community’s enduring spirit. As you leave this tranquil haven, carry with you the message of peace. Remember the rich history. Appreciate the architectural splendor of the Saifee Mosque.”
