The Centre for Mathematical Sciences isn’t just a modern structure. It’s deeply intertwined with the rich history of Cambridge University’s Faculty of Mathematics. The Centre for Mathematical Sciences houses not only the faculty but also the Isaac Newton Institute and the Betty and Gordon Moore Library. It’s located on Wilberforce Road, on land that once belonged to St John’s College. This land, a former playing field, was leased to the university as part of its expansion into West Cambridge. The Isaac Newton Institute, a key part of the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, opened its doors in July 1992. A memorable event at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences was Andrew Wiles’s announcement of his proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem in 1993. While the proof needed further refinement, the announcement itself was a landmark moment. The Centre for Mathematical Sciences, excluding the Isaac Newton Institute, was completed in 2003. Designed by Edward Cullinan architects and Buro Happold, the building is a testament to modern architecture. The design features seven pavilions arranged in a parabola around a central core. This core houses lecture rooms, common spaces, and a unique grass-covered roof. The innovative design earned numerous awards, including the British Construction Industry Major Project Award, the David Urwin Design Award, and the RIBA Award, all in 2003.
