A poignant figure kneels before you. This is the Kriegerdenkmal on Rohmerplatz. It’s more than just a statue. It’s a silent testament. A story etched in stone.

The Kriegerdenkmal remembers 1200 Bockenheim soldiers. They gave their lives in the First World War. The monument was built in 1925. It stands proudly in a green space south of Leipziger Strasse. Notice the inscription on the front of the base. It reads “In memory of the 1200 brave Bockenheim heroes who died for the Fatherland on the field of honor 1914-1918”.

The sculptor was Oskar Ufert. A talented Frankfurter. He was a member of the Frankfurter Künstlergesellschaft. The Kriegerverein Bockenheim commissioned him. This club was founded in 1875. It’s fascinating that long before this memorial the club erected another one. This earlier one was for three Bockenheim citizens. They fell in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. It was on the old Bockenheim cemetery.

The Kriegerverein Bockenheim was part of the Kyffhäuserbund. This was a massive organization. In 1913 it boasted 2.8 million members. Every Volkstrauertag the city lays a wreath here. A touching tribute to those remembered.

The statue depicts a kneeling warrior. His left hand supports a shield on the ground. It’s a powerful image. A symbol of sacrifice and remembrance. A quiet observer of the city’s evolution.

The inscription on the back of the base is also significant. It reads “Erected by the Bockenheim War Veterans Association on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary. Donated by the grateful inhabitants of Bockenheim”. This shows the community’s deep involvement. Their enduring gratitude for the fallen soldiers.

The Kriegerdenkmal isn’t just a memorial. It’s a window into history. It tells a story of war. Loss and community resilience. It is a vital part of Frankfurt’s identity. A tangible reminder of sacrifice and remembrance. Let us take a moment of respectful reflection.
