Beneath the rumble of the Southeast Expressway, Tenean Beach whispers tales of resilience. Tenean Beach isn’t always a beach. King tides often submerge the sand, playground, and even the parking lot, leaving behind debris as a reminder of nature’s power. Maria Lyons, a retired science teacher, remembers the 2018 storms. Floodwaters reached the Expressway, trapping her outside her Port Norfolk neighborhood. She waited at Dunkin’, watching the waters slowly recede, a modern-day exile from her own home, all thanks to Tenean Beach’s precarious position. Tenean Beach sits at the mouth of the Neponset River, a gateway to the Neponset River Greenway. In summer, it bustles with activity, families enjoying the playground, athletes competing on the courts, all against the backdrop of harbor views. But Tenean Beach is also a frontline in Boston’s battle against climate change. Projections show the Conley Street underpass, right next to the beach, becoming a major flood pathway by 2030, threatening the nearby MBTA Red Line. The city recognizes the urgency. Tenean Beach is a “near-term catalytic project” in their Climate Ready Dorchester plan. The solution? Embrace nature. Instead of more concrete, the plan calls for raising Conley Street, creating a natural barrier. The parking lot will shrink, giving way to expanded dunes stabilized by dune grass. The long-neglected Pine Neck Creek will be restored, its native vegetation acting as a natural sponge against rising tides. Tenean Beach’s transformation is more than flood control. It’s a recognition that nature often offers the best solutions. Restoring the salt marsh not only protects against storms but also boosts biodiversity and helps clean the water. This project also requires unprecedented cooperation. The city is partnering with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (who own the land), the Department of Transportation, and the MBTA, demonstrating the collaborative spirit needed to face climate change. Tenean Beach becomes a model for other coastal communities, a symbol of how nature and human ingenuity can work together. It’s a reminder that we protect what we love. Tenean Beach, once a symbol of vulnerability, is becoming a beacon of hope, a place where the community can connect with the waterfront and witness the power of nature to heal and protect. It’s a story of resilience, not just for the beach, but for the city and its people.
