Amidst the bustling energy of Wayne County, lies the charming city of Grosse Pointe Woods. Grosse Pointe Woods is unique. It’s the only one of the five Grosse Pointes without a direct shoreline on Lake St. Clair. However, the city cleverly maintains ownership of a park just across the border in St. Clair Shores, ensuring residents still enjoy lakeside pleasures. Grosse Pointe Woods wasn’t always the vibrant community it is today. Originally incorporated as the Village of Lochmoor in 1927, it later annexed land from Gratiot Township, transforming itself into the Grosse Pointe Woods we know in 1939. The city truly blossomed mid-20th century. The post-World War II era saw significant development. This gives Grosse Pointe Woods a distinct, more modern feel compared to its older Grosse Pointe neighbors. Grosse Pointe Woods is a city of families. The 2010 census revealed a close-knit community with an average household size of 2.51. Education is a cornerstone here. Three public elementary schools, Ferry, Mason, and Monteith, serve the city’s younger residents. Most students move on to Parcells Middle School within Grosse Pointe Woods. Some in the southwest attend Brownell Middle School in Grosse Pointe Farms. All students eventually graduate from Grosse Pointe North High School. Grosse Pointe Woods also boasts a private option, Our Lady Star of the Sea School. Established in 1958, this K-8 Catholic school offers a faith-based education. The building has a rich history. It once housed Our Lady Star of the Sea High School for girls, which operated from 1959 to 1993. Grosse Pointe Woods offers its residents a quiet suburban life. It’s part of the larger Detroit metro area but maintains its own distinct character. The city’s motto, “Urbis Magna Pulchritudine,” meaning “City of Great Beauty,” reflects the community’s pride in its parks and green spaces. From Ghesquire Park to the Veteran’s Memorial Parkway, Grosse Pointe Woods offers a serene escape within a dynamic urban environment.
