The school’s name, Guangya, meaning “knowledgeability and integrity,” reflects the vision of its founder. Originally known as Guangya Academy, it proudly stood as one of the Four Academies of China during the late Qing dynasty. Imagine young scholars poring over ancient texts, absorbing wisdom within these very grounds. Over time, Guangya Academy transformed. It became Guangdong Province First Middle School in 1912. Later, it embraced its original name once more. It even bore the revolutionary title of Red Flag School during the Cultural Revolution. It transitioned from a traditional academy to a modern high school, embracing Western educational principles while honoring Chinese learning. While the junior high program has moved to the privately funded Guangya Experimental School, the legacy continues in its sister institution.
