Hidden in plain sight at 411 North Hollywood Way, the Warner Bros. Ranch whispers tales of Hollywood’s golden age. Warner Bros. Ranch wasn’t always a Warner Bros. domain. It began its life in the 1930s as the Columbia Ranch. Columbia Pictures, needing space for sprawling outdoor sets, transformed this once rural corner of Burbank into a bustling backdrop for their cinematic dreams. The ranch became the go-to location for countless productions. From the antics of The Three Stooges to the caped crusader himself in the 1960s Batman series, Warner Bros. Ranch has seen it all. The magic of moviemaking transformed this compact space. Clever street arrangements and meticulously crafted facades created the illusion of a sprawling metropolis, all within a few city blocks. The ranch’s history is not without its drama. A devastating fire in 1970 swept through the lot, claiming a quarter of the Western, Colonial/European, and even the iconic Blondie Street sets. The Blondie house, also known as the Father Knows Best home, succumbed to the flames. The sets were rebuilt, but subsequent fires further altered the landscape of this historic location. In 1972, Columbia and Warner Bros. joined forces. They formed The Burbank Studios on the Warner lot south of the ranch. Years later, in 1990, Columbia moved its operations to Culver City, leaving Warner Bros. to take the reins of the ranch and rename it. The iconic fountain in the park, a familiar sight from the opening credits of Friends, Bewitched, and countless other shows, became a symbol of the ranch’s enduring legacy. Even Hocus Pocus and 1776 showcased its charm. Warner Bros. Animation also called the ranch home from 2007 to 2023. While much of the original ranch has been redeveloped, the memories and magic created within its gates continue to resonate through the history of Hollywood. The spirit of the Warner Bros. Ranch lives on in every film and show that graced its streets, reminding us of a time when cowboys, superheroes, and sitcom families roamed the same hallowed ground.
