As you stand before Wat San Panthai Norasing, a wave of serenity washes over you. The intricate carvings on the roof, a testament to ancient craftsmanship, draw your gaze upwards. The temple, dedicated to Phan Thai Norasing, a legendary figure from the Ayutthaya period, holds a powerful story that will transport you back in time.

Phan Thai Norasing, originally named Sing, was a skilled coxswain, tasked with navigating the royal barge of King Sanphet VIII. His loyalty and dedication were unmatched. But fate had a cruel twist in store for him.

During a royal fishing trip in 1702, the King and his companions embarked on a journey through the winding Khok Kham Canal. Despite warnings and precautions, the barge struck a tree branch. Ancient Thai law held such negligence punishable by death, leading to Sing’s beheading.

Despite the King’s attempts to grant him a pardon, Phan Thai Norasing insisted on upholding the law. This selfless act of honour and integrity made him a revered figure. The King, moved by his unwavering commitment, ordered the construction of a shrine in his memory, marking the spot where he was executed.

This shrine, now known as the Phanthai Norasing Historical Park, stands as a reminder of Phan Thai Norasing’s story. Within its peaceful grounds, you can find a life-size statue of Phan Thai Norasing, steering his barge. Locals often leave offerings of boxing gloves and cockerel figurines, reflecting his love for these activities. It’s a powerful testament to a man who, though a humble coxswain, rose to the occasion and met his tragic end with courage and unwavering integrity.
