Founded long ago SMK (P) Jalan Ipoh started humbly. It first operated out of Sekolah Rendah Datuk Abu Bakar. That was in May 1962. Back then it was called Sekolah Pelajaran Lanjutan Pusat Dua. There were 440 students and 14 teachers. The school held classes in the afternoon. It helped students who had dropped out after Standard 6 continue their education for two more years.
The school moved again in 1964. It then was housed at Sekolah Menengah Melayu Kampung Baru. It was renamed Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Kampung Baru. This change happened because the Standard Six Examinations were abolished.
Finally in 1973 the school found its permanent home. The location was Batu 3 Jalan Ipoh. The move was necessary due to a growing student population. More classrooms and facilities were needed. The school was renamed Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Jalan Ipoh. In 1980, it became Sekolah Menengah Perempuan Jalan Ipoh. This happened when the English stream was discontinued. Two blocks A and B were added. They accommodated the new students. These blocks were formerly part of the Telekom Training Centre.
Today SMK (P) Jalan Ipoh continues to thrive. It is known for its commitment to academic excellence. The school has a dedicated team of teachers. They provide individual attention to students. The student-to-teacher ratio reflects this. There are 75 teachers for 820 students.
