“Is it true they moved the right field fence just for home runs?” a young fan asked his dad, pointing towards Citi Field. Citi Field has seen its share of changes since opening in 2009. It replaced the aging Shea Stadium, a venue rich in history but lacking the amenities of a modern ballpark. Citi Field, named after the New York financial giant Citigroup, was designed by Populous, then HOK Sport. The stadium’s construction concluded in 2009, marking a new era for the New York Mets. The first official game at Citi Field wasn’t a Mets game at all. It was a college baseball match between St. John’s and Georgetown. The Mets then played an exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox before their first regular season home game versus the San Diego Padres. The stadium boasts a capacity of 41,922 for baseball games, with standing room available for sellouts. Beyond baseball, Citi Field hosts soccer matches, concerts, and other special events. One of the most significant changes to Citi Field came in 2012. The field dimensions were altered to encourage more home runs, a response to criticism about the park being too pitcher-friendly. In 2023, Citi Field unveiled a massive new scoreboard, measuring a whopping 17,400 square feet, making it the largest in Major League Baseball. And yes, the right field fence was indeed moved in 2023 to create a new fan experience area. The address was officially changed in 2019 to 41 Seaver Way, a tribute to legendary Mets pitcher Tom Seaver. Citi Field is more than just a baseball stadium. It’s a symbol of the Mets’ heritage and their connection to New York City. The stadium’s design features pay homage to the team’s National League roots, bridging the past with the present.
