Did the Romans ever imagine their fish factories would one day be neighbors with a modern cemetery? Here at the Cemitário de Póvoa, ancient history and more recent traditions intertwine. The Cemitário de Póvoa wasn’t always here. Cemeteries, as we know them, became common in Portugal only in the late 19th century. Before that, burials took place in parish churchyards, with bones later moved to unmarked common graves. Póvoa de Varzim’s history stretches back much further than the cemetery’s founding. Discoveries show the area has been inhabited since the Lower Paleolithic period, around 200,000 BC. The Romans conquered the region in 138 BC, establishing fish processing units that contributed to the local economy. Centuries later, the area was attacked by Vikings, Moors, and Norman pirates. Despite these tumultuous times, Póvoa de Varzim thrived. Its skilled shipbuilders and navigators contributed to the Age of Discoveries, trading across the globe. The cemetery itself reflects a change in Portuguese burial practices. With the prohibition of church burials in 1835, municipalities established public cemeteries. The Cemitário de Póvoa stands as a testament to this shift, a quiet space where Póvoa de Varzim’s more recent history is etched in stone, a peaceful counterpoint to the bustling city’s vibrant past.
