What’s round, historic, and sits in the middle of a bustling roundabout? Gole Market, of course! Here we stand before this intriguing octagonal structure, a relic of Delhi’s colonial past. Designed by Edwin Lutyens in 1921, Gole Market wasn’t always called that. Originally dubbed “Market Place,” it served as a vital hub for government employees living in the newly developed areas around the Secretariat Building. Imagine these officials, many hailing from distant regions like Bengal and Madras, coming here for their daily needs. Gole Market was the heart of their new lives in the burgeoning capital. The market’s strategic location at a crucial intersection linked it to key landmarks like Gol Dak Khana, Connaught Place, and Mandir Marg. It offered everything from fresh fish and meat to Bengali sweets, books, and even tailoring services. The renowned artist B.C. Sanyal even set up his studio here after Partition, transforming it into a haven for artists and students, later known as Gallery 26. This very spot pulsed with life, a microcosm of Delhi’s diverse population. Bengalis rubbed shoulders with those from Sindh, like the family behind the iconic Karachi Halwa House. The air buzzed with activity as shoppers haggled, vendors called out their wares, and the aroma of spices and sweets mingled. Over the years, Gole Market witnessed changes. The once-vibrant Nirulas restaurant, a beloved local haunt, sadly closed its doors. The building itself fell into disrepair, declared unsafe in 2007. After a long legal battle, the shopkeepers, some of whom had been here since the 1940s, were evicted. Today, Gole Market stands silent, awaiting its rebirth as a museum. This transformation will preserve not just the building but also the memories and stories it holds within its walls. The etched arches, marked with signs like “poultry and fish” and “wine merchants,” serve as a Rosetta Stone, whispering tales of a bygone era. Gole Market’s story is a testament to Delhi’s ever-evolving nature, a reminder of the past nestled within the vibrant present.
