Remembering Paul Beraud. This plaque commemorates a brave man’s sacrifice. The Plaque commémorative Paul BERAUD honors a member of the French Resistance. Paul Beraud was born on March 10 1905. He died on July 19 1944.

Paul Beraud joined the Resistance in October 1942. He worked for the Franco-Polish F2 network. His alias was Maurice. Beraud became head of the Nice sector. His area of operation included his residence on 13 rue Caffarelli. Initially, his sector was part of the Mediterranean sub-network. Jean-Bol directed it. Later in March 1943, it joined the Anne sub-network. Jacques Trolley de Prévaux took command in May 1943.

From March 1944, arrests within the F2 network increased. Jacques Trolley de Prévaux and his wife Charlotte were captured on March 29. Armand Fradin was also taken. On April 14 1944, the Gestapo trapped Paul Beraud in Nice.

The Gestapo transferred Paul Beraud to Marseille. Then he was moved to Lyon. He was imprisoned at Montluc prison in June 1944. On July 19 1944, the Germans summarily executed Paul Beraud. Fifty-one other prisoners died with him. The execution took place in Châtillon-d’Azergues.

Paul Beraud was first buried in Amancey cemetery. His brother-in-law identified his body on January 17 1946. In September 1949, his body was moved to another cemetery.

In 1947, Paul Beraud was posthumously made a lieutenant in the French Forces of the Interior. He received the title of “interned resistant”. In 1946, he was recognized as “Mort pour la France”.

His name appears on several memorials. These include the monument in Châtillon-d’Azergues. It honors those executed on July 19 1944. It is also on the commemorative monument in Nice.
