Gazing up at the Benjamim Salgado Statue, one might wonder about the man immortalized in bronze. Benjamim Salgado, a multifaceted figure, was born in Joane, Famalicão, in 1916 and passed away in 1978. The statue serves as a testament to his rich and varied life. He wasn’t just a composer and choir conductor. Benjamim Salgado was also a priest, professor, journalist, and even a mayor. He wore many hats, each with distinction. He taught Gregorian Chant, Music History, Piano, and Harmony at the Seminary of Braga. He directed the newspaper “Correio do Minho.” He even served as the director of the Cupertino de Miranda Foundation and the Camilo Castelo Branco House. His compositions, often set to texts by Father Joaquim Alves, blended popular song styles with poetic lyrics and simple yet refined harmonies. In 1957, he took the helm of the Famalicense Orphanage. This experience, coupled with choir encounters, steered him toward sacred and secular choral music. Benjamim Salgado played an active role in the Braga Commission for Sacred Music. He embraced the liturgical changes brought about by the Second Vatican Council. While many of his works were published and performed during his lifetime, some remained unpublished. These included a Mass, a Te Deum, a Requiem Mass, a Libera me, an Ave Maria, an Ecce Panis, and Rosas de Maio, all intended for voices and orchestra, sometimes with soloists. The Benjamim Salgado Statue stands as a tribute to a man who contributed significantly to music, religion, journalism, and public service in the Braga region. His legacy continues to inspire and resonate within the community he served.
