Beneath the serene canopy of trees, Herrick Park whispers tales of community and remembrance. This park wasn’t always known by its current name. For years, locals simply called it “the playground”. The story of Herrick Park begins with a generous act of remembrance. James B. Ford anonymously purchased this land in 1917. He then donated it to honor his sister, Harriet F. Herrick.
Harriet was a dedicated supporter of the East Hampton Free Library. She served on its board from its beginning until her death in 1912. Harriet and two others provided significant gifts of books and money. This helped establish the library in its first home. That location is now the Hedges Inn on James Lane. The library later moved to Clinton Hall in August 1897.
Harriet and her husband Dr. Everett Herrick resided at Pudding Hill on Ocean Road. Her father, John R. Ford, acquired the property in 1887. He replaced the old cottage with a mansion. He presented it to his daughter and son-in-law as a wedding gift. Dr. Herrick was a prominent figure. He co-founded the Maidstone Club. He even served as its first president from 1891 until he passed away in 1914.
Dr. Herrick was quite the character. He was known for his conservative views and concern for propriety. He prohibited gambling, alcohol, and Sunday sports at the club. Members eventually rebelled against the no-golf-on-Sunday rule. It was revised to allow play after 12:30 p.m. Sunday-morning golf was not permitted until after Dr. Herrick’s death.
In his will, Dr. Herrick left money to the Maidstone, with conditions. Among them, the Herrick Cup for men’s singles tennis was to be awarded. When the repeal of Prohibition neared, a member replaced Dr. Herrick’s gift. This triggered a provision in his will. The bequest was then awarded to the East Hampton Free Library instead.
Today, Herrick Park is owned by the Incorporated Village of East Hampton. Efforts are underway to enhance Herrick Park. The goal is to empower the community. Envision possibilities.
