“Did you know that a dream inspired one of the greatest scientific achievements?” That dream propelled Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleev to formulate the periodic table. Today, we stand before the Музей-архив Д. И. Менделеева, or the Mendeleev Museum and Archives. It is a place dedicated to his life and work.

The Mendeleev Museum is within the walls of St. Petersburg University. Specifically, it’s in the Twelve Collegia Building. From 1866 to 1890, this building was Mendeleev’s state-issued apartment. Here, he resided with his family.

Imagine the intellectual energy within these walls. The Periodic Law of Chemical Elements came to life right here. It changed chemistry forever. Mendeleev also penned his classic textbook, “Principles of Chemistry” here. Works on gas physics and water solutions based on specific gravity also originated here.

“Mendeleev’s Wednesdays” were a special part of life here. These intellectual gatherings drew the capital’s intelligentsia. Many debates and mysteries unfolded during these evenings.

In 1911, four years after Mendeleev’s death in 1907, this became a museum. The University and the Russian Chemical Society gathered his belongings. His personal library, archive, and items from his widow formed the museum’s foundation.

The Mendeleev Museum has four main rooms. These were once the living room, dining room, study, and a small bedroom. Mendeleev slept in the small bedroom. It gave him a space to break from his work. The master bedroom was in another wing.

The living room displays early family memories. Photos of family, artists, scientists, architects, and colleagues fill the space. He maintained friendships with these people. He socialized with them every Wednesday afternoon. The dining room is the largest room. It holds documents, personal items, lab supplies, and photos.

Adjacent to the apartment is a wing with instruments and equipment. These tools, drawings, models, and lab equipment show Mendeleev’s varied interests.

Mendeleev’s personal library is of great interest. He carefully collected and preserved these books. Also, his memorial study has been recreated using archive photographs. It will transport you to Mendeleev’s working environment.

Mendeleev’s impact extended beyond chemistry. Lev Chugaev called him a genius chemist. He also excelled as a physicist. He researched hydrodynamics, meteorology, and geology. Mendeleev was an expert in chemical industry and an original thinker in economics.

Although Mendeleev never won a Nobel Prize, his legacy lives on. The element mendelevium and a lunar crater bear his name. This street was renamed Mendeleevskaya Linia in 1923. A statue of Mendeleev sits near the Technological Institute with his periodic table on the wall. Here at the Музей-архив Д. И. Менделеева, we celebrate the life and work of a true scientific visionary.
