Had anyone ever seen such vibrant art? The Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús in Cali is a masterpiece. Its frescoes are breathtaking. They depict scenes from Jesus’s life, from birth to resurrection. The Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús isn’t just a church. It’s a testament to faith and artistry. Its story began in 1940, with the laying of the first stone in a humble ramada. The inauguration took place on October 15, 1944. Even with only the Eternit roof tiles in place, it was declared a Votive and Expiatory Temple of the Diocese. Bishop Luis Adriano Díaz led the blessing and the first mass, celebrated by Father Emilio Arango, SJ. The diocese of Cali was then consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on October 29th. The Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús stands as an icon of Ignatian heritage. The European-inspired design, its sheer size, and the magnificent frescoes are unique in Colombia and possibly the entire continent. The church’s interior is equally stunning. Green granite floors, marble columns, and 116 finely crafted wooden pews from Pasto create an atmosphere of reverence. The Carrara marble altar, communion rail, and side altars add to the grandeur. The decoration continued in 1954, with the installation of polychrome mosaics in the apse by Catalan artist Ismael Font, assisted by Emilio Alba. These mosaics, made with thousands of azulejo fragments, depict the Sacred Heart, flanked by Jesuit saints. The ambons, also decorated with mosaics, showcase St. Peter, St. Paul, and the Four Evangelists. The frescoes, painted with earth tones from Germany, cover the central vault and side friezes. They depict scenes like Jesus’s birth, the Sermon on the Mount, and the Resurrection. Spanish stained-glass windows above the apse represent Eucharistic symbols, while others depict the baptismal font, St. Peter’s keys, and the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Behind the choir, more stained glass portrays the Sacred Heart, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, and St. Claude de la Colombière. The Stations of the Cross paintings and the statues of Mary and St. Joseph were also brought from Spain. Iron and glass forges, representing Moses receiving the Ten Commandments and the Sacrifice of Isaac, separate the altars. These were designed by Juan José Salcedo and crafted by Phanor Muriel. The Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús is also home to the Grupo Musical Loyola, formed in 2000 to enhance the weekend and solemn masses. This group of 17 musicians blends popular and classical sacred music. Their dedication enhances the spiritual experience for parishioners. Beyond its artistic and musical richness, the church has a strong social mission. Corazón Solidario, inspired by Ignatian values, serves the community’s most vulnerable members. They focus on the four universal apostolic preferences defined by the Society of Jesus, primarily helping children, youth, and the elderly through Fe y Alegría. Their Christmas campaigns and ongoing efforts bridge the gap between those who have and those who have less.
