What if these walls could talk? The Salvation Army Art Hall stands before us a silent witness to Seoul’s vibrant history. Let’s uncover some of its secrets.

Originally known as the Central Hall of the Salvation Army, this building wasn’t always an art space. It began its life in 1928 as the Salvation Army College for Officer Training. Imagine young cadets here dedicating their lives to service.

Bramwell Booth, the Salvation Army’s first Chief of Staff, visited Korea in 1926. In commemoration of his 70th birthday, members of the American Salvation Army raised funds to construct this very building. Construction began in November 1927 and was completed the following year.

For decades, until 1989, this hall served its primary purpose training officers. Later, it became the Central Hall of the Salvation Army Korea Territory. In 2002, the building received official recognition. It was designated as Seoul Monument No. 20. This cemented its place in the city’s cultural heritage.

Take a closer look at the architecture. The building displays beautiful bilateral symmetry. Notice the four stone pillars at the center. They create a strong visual statement. The entrance and roof are imposing. Inside, the porch flooring features concrete slabs. Wooden corridors and stair railings add warmth. The second floor once housed worship spaces. Triangular wooden beams support the ceiling. This unique design adds to the building’s aesthetic charm.

Today, the Salvation Army Art Hall has been reborn. It’s now known as Jeongdong 1928 Art Center. This transformation is part of Seoul’s historical restoration project in Jeongdong. The Salvation Army took the lead to revitalize its Central Hall. Now, citizens can enjoy performances and exhibitions here.

The Jeongdong 1928 Art Center features a performance hall. It also has a conference room, a gallery, and a workshop. You can also find a community space and rest area. The Salvation Army History Museum is also part of this complex. The center offers programs related to modern history and culture.

The city of Seoul has also enhanced the area. An open space was created in front of the building. It connects to a historical walkway. This improves the Art Center’s utility as a cultural space.

The Salvation Army Art Hall stands as a testament to the past. It is a bridge to the future. Its elegant interior creates an antique atmosphere. This blends seamlessly with the modern ambiance of this historical landmark. As we move on, remember the stories held within these walls. Think about the lives touched by the Salvation Army’s work here. This place is more than just a building. It is a symbol of service, history, and cultural rebirth.
