Here stands Honnoji Temple a place echoing with history and spiritual significance. Founded in 1415 Honnoji has been rebuilt seven times. These rebuilds were necessary due to wars and fires. The temple stands as a testament to resilience.

Honnoji Temple is the head temple of the Honmon school for the Hokke sect of Buddhism. It offers a serene escape from the city’s hustle. It provides a unique window into Japan’s tumultuous past.

The most famous event linked to Honnoji is the Honnoji Incident. Oda Nobunaga one of Japan’s most powerful warlords met his end here. In 1582 Akechi Mitsuhide betrayed Nobunaga. Mitsuhide forced Nobunaga to commit suicide. The temple was burned to the ground. This pivotal event reshaped Japanese history.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi rebuilt Honnoji in 1592. He moved it to its present location. This ensured the temple’s legacy continued. Today the mausoleum of Nobunaga Oda is here. Every year on June 2 a memorial service honors him.

Honnoji is also home to a ginkgo tree. Its high water content helps protect the temple from fire. It is a symbol of hope.

The temple displays many treasures at the Daihoden temple museum. These artifacts offer insights into the temple’s past. They showcase its importance to Japanese culture.

The hours are from 6 am to 5 pm for worship. The Daihoden is open from 9 am to 4:30 pm. There is no fee for worship. The Daihoden Treasure Museum costs 500 yen for general admission.

During the Edo period Honnoji housed Korean embassies. In 1719 a Korean mission of 346 people stayed here. Shin Yu-han a composer described Honnoji as magnificent.

Honnoji faced another fire in the mid-19th century. It was rebuilt in 1928. The monk Nissho and painters Urakami Gyokudo and Urakami Shunkin are buried here.

Visiting Honnoji offers more than just historical insight. It provides a connection to Japanese Buddhism. The temple embodies the enduring spirit of faith. It reflects the blend of history, culture, and spirituality.
