“A church with a name like a Roman emperor?” a child’s voice piped up, breaking the silence as we stood before the Chiesa parrocchiale di San Gaudenzio. The Chiesa parrocchiale di San Gaudenzio isn’t named after an emperor, but after the first bishop of Novara, Saint Gaudentius. He wasn’t Roman, but became a vital figure in spreading Christianity throughout the region. This church, standing as a testament to his legacy, has seen centuries of history unfold within its walls. The original Chiesa parrocchiale di San Gaudenzio was located a bit further down the road, near what is now Viale XX Settembre. Sadly, it was destroyed in the mid-16th century when Charles V fortified Novara. Luckily, they started making plans to rebuild almost immediately. After Novara was spared from the plague of 1576, the city decided to rebuild the Chiesa parrocchiale di San Gaudenzio at the highest point in the city, right where we’re standing. This spot was already occupied by another church, San Vincenzo Martire, but it was mostly demolished. However, a few chapels survived, including one dedicated to San Giorgio. Until 1711, San Giorgio’s Chapel actually housed the relics of San Gaudenzio himself. The design of the Chiesa parrocchiale di San Gaudenzio is often attributed to Pellegrino Tibaldi. The first stone was laid in 1577 and the church was consecrated in 1590, even though parts like the transept and presbytery weren’t even built yet. Due to wars and economic hardships, construction was a stop-and-start affair. It wasn’t fully complete until 1711, marked by the grand placement of San Gaudenzio’s relics into their permanent spot. Inside, the single nave is flanked by six chapels, each with its own story to tell. As you explore Chiesa parrocchiale di San Gaudenzio, remember the long journey of its creation. From a lost church outside the city walls to this grand structure, it stands as a symbol of resilience, faith, and the enduring legacy of San Gaudenzio.
