In 1223, a name emerged from the mists of time: Garbsen. This town, nestled in Lower Saxony, Germany, has a story waiting to be unveiled. Garbsen sits on the Leine River, just a stone’s throw from Hanover. We stand at the edge of a town shaped by time and progress. Garbsen wasn’t always the town we see today. It was once a collection of independent districts, each with its unique flavor. In 1974, these districts merged, creating the Garbsen we know and love.

Garbsen’s transformation was deeply intertwined with the rise of industrialization. After the Second World War, the town’s population boomed. People flocked here, seeking opportunities and a new beginning. In 1963, a new district arose: Auf der Horst. This residential and working-class district was designed to house up to 10,000 residents. Originally a project of Hanover, Auf der Horst became pivotal to Garbsen’s independent urban development. The post-war years saw Garbsen become a commuter town for workers in Hanover’s bustling industries. Companies like VW Nutzfahrzeuge, Continental, and VARTA (now Johnson Controls) drew people to the area. Garbsen has since shifted its economic focus. It has cultivated a diverse range of medium-sized businesses, creating a thriving local economy. The number of jobs has more than doubled, a testament to the town’s dynamism.

Garbsen is also a hub for education and innovation. The Production Technology Center (PZH) and the Underwater Technology Center are located here, representing significant parts of the Mechanical Engineering Department of Leibniz University of Hannover. The town is home to thirteen unique districts: Altgarbsen, Auf der Horst, Berenbostel, Frielingen, Garbsen-Mitte, Havelse, Heitlingen, Horst, Meyenfeld, Osterwald Oberende, Osterwald Unterende, Schloss Ricklingen, and Stelingen. Each district adds a unique thread to the rich tapestry of Garbsen. The town’s landscape is a blend of sandy and boggy terrain, punctuated by the fertile floodplain of the Leine River. This diverse landscape tells a story of geological change, shaping the town’s character. Garbsen is a town forged in history, driven by progress, and filled with the promise of the future. Its story is an echo of Germany’s own narrative, a tale of resilience, adaptation, and growth. As you explore Garbsen, remember the echoes of the past and the promise of the future that resonate in every corner of this remarkable town.
