Ever wondered what it’s like to stand before a body of water so vast it feels like an ocean? That is Lake Nicaragua. Locals often call it Cocibolca or Granada Lake. It is Central America’s largest freshwater lake. It is the second largest in Latin America. Only Lake Titicaca is bigger.

Lake Nicaragua covers 3191 square miles. That is 8372 square kilometers. The lake boasts more than 300 islets. It also has three islands and two volcanoes. Imagine the Spanish explorers. They called it “La mar dulce”. This means “The sweet sea.”

This lake is unique. It is the only freshwater lake in the world with sharks. Bull sharks have adapted to its fresh water. They can even jump along the rapids of the San Juan River to the Caribbean Sea. Tagged sharks have been caught in the ocean just days after being tagged in the lake.

Granada sits on the northwest shore of Lake Nicaragua. This location gave it a significant advantage. Historically, it became an Atlantic port via the San Juan River. This happened despite being closer to the Pacific Ocean.

Pirates from the Caribbean frequently raided Granada. This was before the Panama Canal was built. Cornelius Vanderbilt’s Accessory Transit Company used Lake Nicaragua. It connected the Atlantic and Pacific. Passengers would cross the lake and then travel overland across the Isthmus of Rivas.

The lake’s volcanic activity created stunning features. The Mombacho volcano erupted long ago. This eruption formed over 300 islets. Some islets are tiny. Some are home to fishermen. Others feature cafes, restaurants, and hotels.

Ometepe Island is the largest island in a freshwater lake. It features both white and black sand beaches. The black sand comes from the nearby volcanoes.

The lake’s ecology faces challenges. Pollution and the introduction of non-native species threaten the ecosystem. Despite these challenges, Nicaraguans call it “Mar Dulce.” This shows their deep connection to this essential water source.

Lake Nicaragua is known for its strong waves. These waves are driven by easterly winds. The lake also experiences powerful storms.
