“Did you know that St Francis Savior Church in Phnom Penh has witnessed centuries of Cambodian history?” I ask. The church stands before us a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of the Cambodian people. St Francis Savior Church wasn’t always here. Its story is interwoven with the very fabric of Cambodia’s past.

In the mid-16th century the first missionaries arrived. They brought the good news of Christianity to Cambodia. For centuries the church faced challenges. Wars invasions and persecution tested its existence. The Siamese wars even forced many Cambodian Catholics to relocate to Bangkok. Others regrouped in Battambang.

In 1866 King Norodom requested the church’s relocation to Phnom Penh. This pivotal moment marked a turning point. The Catholic Church slowly developed. It eventually ordained the first Cambodian priest. Then came the devastating Khmer Rouge regime. It marked a tragic chapter in Cambodian history. All Catholic churches including St Francis Savior’s predecessor were systematically destroyed. Priests and many faithful were killed. The church’s very existence seemed to vanish.

Yet faith endured. After the Khmer Rouge’s fall in 1979 Catholics returned. They secretly practiced their faith in homes and hidden places. They faced discrimination but their faith remained strong. In 1990 the government finally granted permission for the Catholic Church to resume its public services. The first Eucharist was celebrated during Khmer New Year. Thousands of Catholics and other Christians attended.

The church was rebuilt. Slowly St Francis Savior Church rose again. It’s a symbol of hope revival and the unwavering strength of the Cambodian Catholic community. The church now serves the Cambodian people. It has created schools vocational training centers hospitals and other community initiatives. St Francis Savior Church continues to be a beacon of faith community and hope in Phnom Penh. Its story is a testament to the enduring power of faith in the face of adversity. It’s a story that deserves to be remembered and cherished for generations to come.
