Could a synagogue built on land donated by a Lutheran real estate developer become a beacon of unity? The Beach Haven Jewish Center stands as a testament to this unlikely partnership. Right here, on Avenue Z, stands a symbol of resilience and community. The Beach Haven Jewish Center’s story began in the 1950s with a small group, many of them Holocaust survivors and WWII veterans. Led by Rabbi Israel Wagner, they initially held services in an underground garage. As their numbers grew, they needed a proper space. Rabbi Wagner, having only heard of the prominent land developer Fred Trump, decided to reach out. An unlikely friendship blossomed between the Lutheran Trump and the Polish Rabbi Wagner. Trump donated the land for the Beach Haven Jewish Center and even contributed to its construction. Their bond continued for decades, with Trump attending the center’s annual dinner and referring to Rabbi Wagner as “My Rabbi.” The Beach Haven Jewish Center was founded on principles of faith, love for one another, and a strong Jewish identity. They understood the importance of youth involvement. They established a Hebrew school and a youth congregation. Rebbetzin Wagner spearheaded the Young Women’s Group. Today, Rabbi Shimmy and Sarah Silver continue to nurture this vibrant community. They offer a wide range of programs, from Bar/Bat Mitzvah clubs to Shabbat festivities, all imbued with the joy of Judaism. The Beach Haven Jewish Center, born from an unusual friendship, continues to thrive as a testament to unity and the power of community.
