Unicatólica’s history began with Monseñor Alberto Uribe. He arrived in Cali in the 1960s. Pope Paul VI sent him to address the city’s social issues. Industrialization caused significant immigration. This led to the unorganized growth of the city. Land invasions by immigrants sparked social conflict.
Monseñor Uribe noticed a lack of institutions. He saw a need for professional training. He also observed a shortage of parishes. These parishes were needed for pastoral work in marginalized neighborhoods. Uribe partnered with commercial sectors. Together they created parishes. These parishes focused on social promotion. They established schools and cultural centers. The Carvajal Foundation and the Caicedo Foundation joined this effort. With the Archdiocese of Cali’s support, they built training centers. These centers offered education to underprivileged youth.
In 1994, Monseñor Isaías Duarte Cancino continued this mission. He promoted a dedicated site for these students. On March 19, 1996, the Pance campus opened. It became the main campus of the university foundation.

Today Unicatólica offers over 20 programs. These include technical and technological courses. It also offers professional university programs. These are spread across four faculties. These faculties include Humanities and Social Sciences. Also included are Business Sciences, Engineering, and Education. The institution has a postgraduate and continuing education unit. Currently, Unicatólica has over 5,000 students.
