Amidst the vibrant chaos of District 5 stands Nghia An Assembly Hall a testament to enduring faith and cultural heritage. This isn’t just any assembly hall. Nghia An Assembly Hall also known as Ong Pagoda or Quan De Temple is a significant landmark for the Trieu Chau community. Built in the mid-19th century it serves as both a place of worship and a powerful symbol of their cultural identity.

The hall’s architecture is distinctly Chaozhou style. It’s rectangular with a three-part roof. The central section rises higher than the sides adorned with intricately carved images of two dragons playing with pearls. Restoration efforts most recently in 2010 have preserved many artifacts. These include tureens parallel sentences and paintings all showcasing the artistic skill of the era.

Nghia An Assembly Hall is more than just beautiful architecture. It’s a living hub for the Chinese community in Ho Chi Minh City. It’s a spiritual haven passed down through generations. Within its walls you’ll find statues dedicated to Quan Cong the revered god of war. Other deities like Thien Hau and Van Xuong De Quan are also honored here. The main hall features a striking statue of Quan De a red-faced long-bearded figure in traditional costume surrounded by commemorative plaques.

Beyond the main hall lies a tranquil fish pond a space for reflection and community connection. The Nghia An Assembly Hall covers nearly 2000 square meters. It offers a peaceful respite in the heart of the city. The hall was officially recognized as a national architectural and artistic monument in 1993. It welcomes visitors daily from 7 am to 6 pm free of charge.

More than just a place of worship Nghia An Assembly Hall holds a special place in the hearts of the people. It is a repository of their history. It is a testament to their resilience. It is a gathering place that continues to serve its purpose connecting generations of the Trieu Chau community in Ho Chi Minh City and beyond.
