Sculpted in bronze, the Джамбул Джабаев Statue stands before you. It captures a powerful moment in time. The Джамбул Джабаев Statue in Saint Petersburg is more than just a monument. It’s a tribute to the Kazakh poet, Dzhambul Dzhabaev. It symbolizes the cultural exchange between Kazakhstan and Russia. Dzhabaev, a celebrated figure in Kazakh literature, became a prominent voice during the Soviet era. He composed poems praising Lenin, the city of Leningrad, and the Soviet victory in World War II. His words resonated not only in Kazakhstan, but also throughout the Soviet Union. This statue, unveiled in 2003, was a gift to Saint Petersburg for the city’s 300th anniversary. The sculptor, Valentin Dmitriyevich Sveshnikov, portrayed Dzhabaev in traditional Kazakh attire, holding his dombra. The inscription on the pedestal simply reads “Dzhambul.” This statue was erected on the site of a previous monument to Dzhabaev, placed there in 1952. The older monument was designed by V.D. Sveshnikov. The architects were F.K. Romanovsky and I.P. Chern. The sculptor of that original monument was B. Abishev. The Джамбул Джабаев Statue serves as a reminder of the poet’s enduring legacy. His powerful voice, once echoing across the steppes of Kazakhstan, now whispers through the streets of Saint Petersburg.
