The Church of Today Unity Church is part of the worldwide Unity movement. This movement was founded in the late 1800s by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore. It’s also part of the broader New Thought Movement. With churches and spiritual centers around the world, the Unity movement offers a positive path for spiritual living.
Though its roots are in Christianity, the Church of Today Unity Church draws wisdom from all world religions. It offers a progressive and inclusive approach to traditional Christian faith. This approach is practical and mystical. Many who have given up on traditional religion find what they’re looking for in Unity. It’s a welcoming place for those who consider themselves spiritual, but not religious.
Unity’s teachings can be broken down into five basic principles of Truth. God is everywhere and always present. Humans are innately good. Thoughts influence events. Prayer and meditation connect us to God. We must apply spiritual teachings in all areas of life.
Unity views God as spiritual energy available to all. Charles Fillmore said God is not a person who left creation to run down like a clock. God is Spirit, infinite Mind, and the force everywhere in nature. Unity teaches the divinity of Jesus and all human beings.
At the Church of Today Unity Church, prayer is not about changing God. It’s about aligning our minds with the Infinite. Prayer connects us with the Universe’s Creative Force. Meditation heightens our link to the Divine. Unity uses affirmative prayer to eliminate negative thoughts. It empowers us to focus on the Truth.
The Church of Today Unity Church was pioneered by Rev. Wendy Craig-Purcell. She founded The Unity Center in San Diego. With only a handful of people in the beginning, The Unity Center’s teachings now reach many people worldwide. Rev. Wendy was the youngest to have been ordained in Unity at just 23. She is affectionately called “The Rev” by her spiritual community. Her mission is to teach everyday spiritual wisdom for conscious living and global transformation.
