Is faith a seed? Redeemer’s Deliverance Church, right here on West Lehigh Avenue, might make you believe so. This church sprouted from humble beginnings, a prayer meeting of just ten souls back in 1961. Guided by the late Rev. Benjamin Salters and his wife Essie, that small group blossomed into a congregation. They moved from a modest residence to a building at 25th and Jefferson Streets, nurtured by the word of the late Rev. Benjamin Smith, Sr.. Redeemer’s Deliverance Church continued to grow, taking root in larger spaces, first at 22nd and Columbia Avenue, then a 900-seat theater in Tioga. Each move was fueled by their dedication to street evangelism, drawing multitudes to their message. By 1973, Redeemer’s Deliverance Church found a new home on North Broad Street, a grand reconstructed theater that welcomed 3,000. Even with closed-circuit television rooms for the overflow, their faith filled every corner. In 1992, Redeemer’s Deliverance Church planted itself firmly at 2001 W. Lehigh Avenue. This impressive edifice, with a capacity of 5,100, stands as a testament to their journey. It’s a beacon, led today by Pastor Glen Spaulding, reminding us that even the smallest seed of faith can flourish into something magnificent.
